In 2018/2019, our local community at Werrimull, along with many other farming areas, was hit by a severe drought. The first year brought only about 110mm of rain, followed by approximately 69mm the next year.
The landscape was unrecognizable—sand dunes had taken over, and even the main highway had warning signs about dust storms reducing visibility. Fence lines had disappeared beneath the drifting sand, and Mildura frequently endured dust storms, with strong winds blowing in from the west.
On this particular day, while standing on the verandah at my family’s farm, we could see a dust storm rolling in. It was the perfect opportunity for a photo. I quickly grabbed my camera gear, jumped in the ute, and raced to the top of the hill for a better vantage point. But before we could get there, we were completely engulfed in the storm—I couldn’t see past the bonnet. We waited for a little while, letting the worst of it pass, and once it cleared, I finally captured this image.
